For Pete's Sake

June 28, 2007

Brickyard 15 - KG Sox 14 (10 Innings)

Truly a game for the ages that had everything you would want in a ballgame, a real treat for anyone who played or witnessed this game. In front of a sell-out crowd the top two teams in the Nahant Softball League went at it on Thursday night and had an epic battle that took 10 innings to decide a winner. The Greenies lost the flip and batted first, putting up a three spot. The Yard came back with a run in the bottom and scored three more in the bottom of the second. Down one the Greensox got a three-run homerun from Johnny "Thong" Lacorte, a laser-beam grounder that rolled all the way to the gap in right-center. In the fourth inning down two, Pete Feeley got up with a man on second and roped a liner out to left center. Stretching it into a double, Pete slid awkwardly into second and was clearly in agonizing pain. Eventually getting to his feet after a long delay, he was carried off the field by teammates and eventually to a stretcher, and into an ambulance. Claps and cheers for the poor guy rang out like bells on Santa's sliegh. From this moment on, for the Brickyard, it was truly, "For Pete's Sake". Up one run going into the bottom of the seventh inning the Greensox looked to wrap this one up. A couple of walks, bad hops, and a big hit got the Brickyard a run and another chance. Zeros filled the scoreboard until the top of the tenth when Jay Cronin came up with one out and Zach "Tito" Taylor on first. Cronin laced a double into center, scoring Taylor for the go-ahead run. Ian Croal drove in one more run, adding some insurance. Pat O'Leary took the hill and looked to close the door on what would be the greatest slow-pitch softball game ever played. After a couple quick outs the Brickyard got a couple of singles and had two on with two out. Adolph "A-Train" Gracile dug his way into the box, representing the winning run with two outs, and the game on the line. On a 1 and 1 count Gracile put a drive into a ball that sailed deep to right. Johnny Lacorte gave chase, but the ball was just hit to hard. Adolph scampered around the bases and dove head first for the plate avoiding a sweeping tag from Ian "Big Cat" Croall to win the game.
Also of Note: Our prayers go out to Pete and we hope for a quick and easy recovery. Diagnosis was a dislocated petela(kneecap).
